ABOUT A BOOK: STAY WITH ME
Today I'm going to tell you about a book.
Now this isn’t the kind of book I usually talk about, write about or in fact read. This books is different from most things I like. This is, however, a book that I couldn’t put down.
I was listening, like I so often do, to the Otherppl podcast. Brad Listi was interviewing Ayobami Adebayo. Now Listi is a great interviewer and I always enjoy listening to his interviews but this one was especially pleasant and it immediately let me to download Adebayo’s book STAY WITH ME.
It happens that I do that. I like supporting authors and the fact that I download a book doesn’t automatically mean that I’ll read it. I always try, but often I give up because if it doesn’t hold my interest then I have at least 10 other books on my radar at any given time.
But I started reading and I really couldn’t stop. I don’t do one-sitting readings anymore but this was as close to that as I get these days. Any time I could be reading I was reading it and I finished it in two or three days. Initially it was the small culture shock that kept me reading but then I really started to care about the fate of these people and I loved the way she built up the story and how she portrayed her characters.
It’s a heartbreaking story, written with maturity and emotion that’s quite extraordinary. It’s a realistic story of a woman and about love that goes through hell. It’s a great debut novel and so worth all the attention it can get. It doesn’t have the fantastic elements that I usually go for. It isn’t science-fiction, magical-realism, horror or weird, but a realistic story about how life can turn out and even if you are like me and usually go for those odder stories I still urge you to read this book.
It’s worth the effort and the time.
